Big News for Classic Trainers!
The Pokémon community is buzzing with excitement as The Pokémon Company and Nintendo have officially announced that two of the most beloved entries in the franchise, Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version, are coming to Nintendo Switch (and Nintendo Switch 2) on February 27, 2026 — perfectly timed to celebrate Pokémon Day and the 30th anniversary of the series.
Release Date & Availability
The classic remakes — originally released for the Game Boy Advance in 2004 — will launch as digital downloads on the Nintendo eShop on Friday, February 27, 2026. Both titles are priced at approximately $19.99 / £16.99 each and must be purchased separately, with versions available in multiple languages depending on region.
These Switch versions will be compatible with both the original Nintendo Switch and the newer Switch 2 hardware, allowing fans across consoles to jump back into the Kanto region adventure.
What’s Inside: Old School Adventure Meets Modern Access
Although these Switch releases stay true to the classic GBA gameplay, the nostalgia factor is stronger than ever. You’ll:
- Explore the world of Kanto, starting in Pallet Town and battling Gym Leaders toward the Pokémon League.
- Encounter the original 151 Pokémon along with the post-game Sevii Islands, a fan-favorite expansion that adds exploration and challenges beyond the main story.
- Enjoy local wireless trading and battles without the need for a Game Link Cable, thanks to modern connectivity features.
While these versions preserve the original mechanics and structure, future updates are expected to add Pokémon HOME compatibility, letting players transfer their treasured Pokémon into newer titles.
The Legacy of FireRed and LeafGreen
Originally launched over two decades ago as enhanced remakes of the very first Pokémon games, FireRed and LeafGreen helped solidify a tradition of revisiting classic adventures with modern polish. Their introduction of new mechanics — such as abilities, natures, held items, and wireless features back in 2004 — shaped the future of the franchise and holds a special place in the hearts of veterans.
This Switch re-release not only celebrates that legacy but introduces a whole new generation of Trainers to the rich history of the series’ early days.
Whether you grew up with these titles or you’re discovering them for the first time on Switch, The PokeFactory will be your go-to hub for exploring all things FireRed and LeafGreen.
